Implementing Mathematical Modeling with English Learners
Ji-Yeong I, Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa collaborating with Kaitlin Ogden, Meredith Middle School, Des Moines, Iowa

The primary purpose of this collaborative project is to develop an effective mathematics curriculum in order to support English learners (ELs) to make sense of essential mathematical concepts through modeling problems that are closely related to the students' real lives. Through this project, the researcher and the teacher employ multi-tier design-based research to co-develop mathematical lessons based on modeling problems and co-teach the lessons for ELs in an urban middle school located in Midwest. Additionally, this project aims to design a set of mathematical modeling lessons that can connect to ELs' real world through collaboration of a researcher and a teacher, as well as increase the capacity of the teacher and the researcher to analyze students' data in order to understand EL's learning in mathematical modeling.
