The math department of Kensington High School for the Creative and Performing Arts (KCAPA) seeks to deepen students'conceptual understanding of mathematics through engagement in reasoning & sense-making activities. Specifically, we would like to be trained in the 5Es (Engage, Explore, Explain, Extend (or Elaborate), and Evaluate) constructivist instructional model. This model is already being used in KCAPA's chemistry and physical science classes, where we have seen a sharp increase in student engagement and reasoning skills. The purpose of this proposal is to provide funding for 5Es in-service training from the instructional staff of Drexel University's Dragons Teach program. Training will include full-day and half-day workshops and professional walkthroughs spaced throughout the school year.
