The work of teachers in kindergarten–grade 5 takes them
beyond their states’ standards. This book is designed to support the strategy that the authors see as best for achieving the expectations of CCSS-type state standards: creating schools and districts that operate as professional learning communities (PLCs). To implement this strategy, the authors provide guidance, support, and process tools to help collaborative teams of teachers strengthen student learning and performance. The book helps teams focus their curriculum to increase achievement and offers ten high-leverage team actions for instruction and assessment in kindergarten–grade 5. It identifies actions that teachers should take before a unit of instruction begins, actions and formative assessments that should occur during instruction, and highly effective ways to reflect on assessment results to prepare for the next unit of instruction. Appendixes and reproducible resources supply instructional strategies aligned with CCSS.
