NCTM's Collaborative Efforts

  • Blog: NCTM's Collaborative Efforts
    June 2024

In my June President’s Message, I talked about the importance of both horizontal and vertical collaboration to better meet the needs of our students. Collaboration is also needed by professional organizations to better meet the needs of our members and to help change educational systems and structures to meet the needs of students. I want to share some of the collaborative efforts that NCTM is involved in—some of them longstanding and some more recent.

    Professional Learning Opportunities

    • Joint Elementary Conference on Literacy and Mathematics with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE). Plans are underway to host this event again next summer.
    • Joint Early Childhood Mathematics summer webinar series with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC).

    Position Statements

    • The importance of Data Science with the National Science Teaching Association (NSTA), National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS), Computer Science Teachers Association (CSTA), and American Statistical Association (ASA)
    • Forthcoming statement on teaching mathematics to students with disabilities with the Council for Exceptional Children (CEC)
    • Forthcoming statement on the need for a diverse teaching field with NSTA, NCSS, NCTE, and the teacher education groups associated with the four content areas
    • STEM education with NCSM
    • Calculus with the Mathematical Association of America (MAA)
    • Preparing PK-12 Teachers of Statistics with ASA
    • The Role of Elementary Mathematics Specialists with the Association of Mathematics Teacher Educators (AMTE), Association of State Supervisors of Mathematics (ASSM), and NCSM

    Mathematics Education Collaborations

    • Presidents of NCTM, NCSM, ASSM, and AMTE meet monthly
    • High School Mathematics Reimagined will be released in Chicago in September and is a collaborative effort among NCTM, NCSM, ASSM

Some of the Alliances NCTM is involved with

Through all of our collaborative efforts, NCTM is committed to continually advocate for high-quality mathematics education for each and every student. We recognize that these collaborative efforts are one way to do this.
